It's been a pretty bleak June here in the Pacific Northwest, even for a girl who prefers her weather on the bleak side.
But today, the early morning sun brightened the walls of my bedroom and the choice was easy; I called in a half day of vacation and headed to Tiger Mountain! It was my first Tiger trip of this year, and every year, on my first time, I remember again how much I love it there. The forest was its usual Tiger Mountain heaven: green and lush, flowers, cool wind, sunshine, birds -- including a beautifully exotic male western tanager neotropical migrant (I didn't know that; I had to email a description to my friend Penny, birder extraordinaire, when I got home). Tiger provides an efficient, leg-burning workout: a little over an hour to hike up, a little under an hour to jog back down. I was still smiling when I got to work, right after lunchtime. What a wonderful way to start a new summer!
Today is the longest day of the year, and winter is on its way. But first, welcome back, summer. It's good to see you!
