It's the first of May, the traditional start of the new training year for skiers. There are a lot of articles floating around, telling us how to structure our training and work toward our goals, but one thing they all have in common is that, now, at the beginning of the year, we should think about what went well last year, what needs improvement, and what we will work on. For me, it's easy: I have the same desires as last year, which is to say, be more consistent and disciplined in my workouts, and see if this 100% slow-twitch body can find some lightness and quickness and, maybe, even a little speed.
To that end, tonight I met Lisa and Mona for the first Tuesday night Home Gym workout of the season. I was late, having to maneuver around anarchists surrounding my office building, but I found them ski walking up the long hill, and I joined them for the last three of their set of five. Then we headed to the pull-up bars for a strength workout. We took it easy, this first time out of the box; we have many Tuesday evenings still ahead of us. Neil joined us at the very end for three push-ups, the most he's done all year; maybe next week he'll do four!
I love this workout, especially on a night like tonight, when it's rainy and chilly and spring-like. It was great to spend time with my training peeps and to get started on a brand new year, full of challenges and successes and fun times that we can't see yet. What will happen this year?
